DNA barcoding in Mucorales: an inventory of biodiversity Naturalis
Walther, G.; Pawłowska, J.; Alastruey-Izquierdo, A.; Wrzosek, M.; Rodriguez-Tudela, J.L.; Dolatabadi, S.; Chakrabarti, A.; Hoog, G.S. de.
The order Mucorales comprises predominantly fast-growing saprotrophic fungi, some of which are used for the fermentation of foodstuffs but it also includes species known to cause infections in patients with severe immune or metabolic impairments. To inventory biodiversity in Mucorales ITS barcodes of 668 strains in 203 taxa were generated covering more than two thirds of the recognised species. Using the ITS sequences, Molecular Operational Taxonomic Units were defined by a similarity threshold of 99 %. An LSU sequence was generated for each unit as well. Analysis of the LSU sequences revealed that conventional phenotypic classifications of the Mucoraceae are highly artificial. The LSU- and ITS-based trees suggest that characters, such as rhizoids and...

Genetic relationships between varieties of Stenocereus pruinosus (Cactaceae) in the states of Puebla and Oaxaca, Mexico, by means of AFLP markers Agrociencia
Yáñez-López,María de L.; Barbosa-Martínez,Claudia; Serrato-Díaz,Alejandra; Balderas-Morales,Atzin; Campos-Muñiz,Carolina; Fernández,Francisco J.; Armella-Villalpando,Miguel A..
Abstract: Pitaya de mayo, Stenocereus pruinosus (Otto) Buxbaum (Cactaceae), is a horticultural produce with great importance in the Mixteca region (Sowthwestern Puebla and Northeastern Oaxaca, México) and is gaining international attention for its sweet and fresh flavor; accordingly, many different cultivars or varieties were developed. In this study we used AFLP molecular markers with the objective of analyzing the genetic relationships between six varieties. Stenocereus stellatus (Pfeiffer) Ricobono variety was considered as outgroup, and the putative hybrid from these two species, San Gabriel, was grown in 12 plots of clonal reproduced plants at Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Region in Mexico. Results showed many polymorphisms, and similarity indexes fluctuated...

Morphological variation of Aplectana hylambatis (Nematoda: Cosmocercidae) from different anuran hosts and localities in Argentina Anais da ABC (AABC)
GONZÁLEZ,CYNTHYA E.; GÓMEZ,VALERIA I.; HAMANN,MONIKA I..
Abstract: Aplectana hylambatis is a nematode with a wide geographic distribution and low host specificity. In spite of numerous reports, until this moment, the morphological variations between different hosts and localities have not been studied. We studied 401 specimens collected from five host species from seven localities in Argentina, and examined the following morphological characters: mamelon-like cuticular protuberances anterior to the vulva, structure of the gubernaculum and the spicules, number and arrangement of caudal papillae, and the measurements of twelve characters in females and eleven characters in males. The results showed that mamelon-like protuberances and caudal papillae varied in number and arrangement between different hosts and...

The use and limits of ITS data in the analysis of intraspecific variation in Passiflora L. (Passifloraceae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Mäder,Geraldo; Zamberlan,Priscilla M.; Fagundes,Nelson J.R.; Magnus,Tielli; Salzano,Francisco M.; Bonatto,Sandro L.; Freitas,Loreta B..
The discovery and characterization of informative intraspecific genetic markers is fundamental for evolutionary and conservation genetics studies. Here, we used nuclear ribosomal ITS sequences to access intraspecific genetic diversity in 23 species of the genus Passiflora L. Some degree of variation was detected in 21 of these. The Passiflora and Decaloba (DC.) Rchb. subgenera showed significant differences in the sizes of the two ITS regions and in GC content, which can be related to reproductive characteristics of species in these subgenera. Furthermore, clear geographical patterns in the spatial distribution of sequence types were identified in six species. The results indicate that ITS may be a useful tool for the evaluation of intraspecific genetic...

Unsuspected intraspecific variability in the toxin production, growth and morphology of the dinoflagellate Alexandrium pacificum R.W. Litaker (Group IV) blooming in a South Western Mediterranean marine ecosystem, Annaba Bay (Algeria) ArchiMer

Physiological plasticity gives HABs species the ability to respond to variations in the surrounding environment. The aim of this study was to examine morphological and physiological variability in Alexandrium pacificum R.W. Litaker (Group IV) (former Alexandrium catenella) blooming in Annaba bay, Algeria. Monoclonal cultures of up to 30 strains of this neurotoxic dinoflagellate were established by the germination of single resting cysts from the surface sediment of this southern Mediterranean marine ecosystem. Ribotyping confirmed formally for the first time that A. pacificum is developing in Eastern Algerian waters. Toxin analyses of A. pacificum strains revealed substantial intraspecific variability in both the profile and toxin amount. However, the...

Variability in the germination of spores among and within natural populations of the endangered tree fern Dicksonia sellowiana Hook. (Xaxim) BABT
Gomes,Gabriela Schmitz; Randi,Áurea Maria; Puchalski,Ângelo; Santos,Daisy da Silva; Reis,Maurício Sedrez dos.
The objective of this study was to analyze the existing variability in the germination of individuals' spores collected from two natural populations of Dicksonia sellowiana in southern Brazil. The largest intrapopulational variation was observed for the spores germination. These results suggested the existence of adaptative strategies that favored the gradual and continuous entrance of new individuals into the gametophytic population. The behavior of the individuals of the species within each population followed a similar pattern of initial development, in spite of conspicuous differences in the population structure. This showed a low differentiation between the populations and the existence of adaptative strategies which were common to both communities.
